Kit Check adds Medi-Span Integration, New Safety Features for Pharmacy Kit Processing
Washington, DC – March 27, 2014 – Kit Check™ (http://kitcheck.com), the leader in hospital pharmacy kit processing software, today announced two new features in a March software update: Medi-Span integration and enhancements to Trusted Pharmacist Medication Checks. Since Kit Check is a cloud-based software solution, both features are available to all customers immediately. The new features are examples of customer-driven development designed to further extend pharmacy kit medication accuracy and safety.
“A key benefit for Kit Check users today is increased pharmacy kit medication accuracy. Manual processing is highly error prone and Kit Check was shown by a University Research Hospital to increase pharmacy kit accuracy by 99.5%. Medi-Span integration ensures that all medications entered into the system comply with a standard naming convention. The Trusted Pharmacist Medication Check ensures that only pharmacist verified medications are added to kits. Both features were requested by customers to further enhance medication safety in hospitals and are available today,” said Kit Check CTO Tim Kress-Spatz.
About Medi-Span Integration
Medi-Span is a leading provider of prescription drug information and among the most widely used sources of medication naming standards. As more hospitals started using Kit Check, it became clear that some users were assigning abbreviations and nicknames for medications. The concern of some customers was that this freedom in naming could lead to an error. To address this, Kit Check software was integrated with the Medi-Span medication database to ensure only recognized medication names are utilized. This step should further enhance kit accuracy and patient safety.
About Trusted Pharmacist Check
Kit Check also added new features to the Trusted Pharmacist Medication Check that establishes another verification point promoting even greater pharmacy kit accuracy. The original Kit Check software already was shown to decrease errors to 0.025% from 5% for manual methods. However, even the small numbers of errors that were process driven could be eliminated if there was a check by a registered pharmacist to ensure that the:
1.Information on the tag is correct
2.The right tag is attached to the right item
3.That only pharmacist verified medications could be added to kits
The first two steps were already being done by many users and they established “Trusted” kit medications using Kit Check. However, there is now a way to record the “Trusted” status in the system. By adding a feature to record these processes, the software now can ensure only “Trusted” items are added to kits and provide an audit trail for the kit medication lifecycle. This is another example of a customer request that quickly became a new Kit Check feature enhancement.
