Kit Check Install Stories: Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters
Kit Check Product Delivery Manager Scott Kinsky shares the story behind the installation of Kit Check at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters in Norfolk, Virginia.

November 12, 2014

Briefly describe the activities leading up to the install.
Two weeks prior to our arrival in Norfolk at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD), we had regular calls with the Director of Pharmacy, the Pharmacy Technician Coordinator and one of the Pharmacists (Andy, Trena and Wilma, respectively). We stayed in regular communication up to our arrival with the tasks that both the Kit Check and King’s Daughters teams needed to complete, which include loading User Lists and Tray Layouts, getting IP address information, ordering new stock, and making space for the equipment. We had phenomenal cooperation from the hospital staff in identifying the space into which we were going to set up the scanning station and Zebra printer, in addition to getting the IP addresses for each machine.

What happened first upon arrival for the go-live?
We verified that the space the pharmacy staff had identified for the scanning station and RFID printer was close to the data ports and was large enough. Once that was established, we went through the printer and scanner configuration process, uploaded the most recent firmware and Kit Check files into the printer and Scanning Station and verified that the IP addresses provided could communicate with our cloud servers. The installation process was fairly quick and we were up and running within an hour.

What was the biggest challenge of this install?
The biggest challenge was the quick turnaround time from the start of the Implementation. They had their Kick Off call on September 10th and went live on the 30th. We went on back-to-back trips on the weeks of 9/22 and 9/29 to make sure everything would be ready before the month ended. I am happy we were able to turn around this site so quickly, as they did have quite a few trays and 9,000 items to tag. A big thanks goes out to the staff at CHKD and to our own Kit Check staff. It was a total team effort. And goes to show how easy the Kit Check install process can be.

What was something unique to this hospital?
chkd-campusCHKD is part of a large, beautiful medical campus that includes a medical school and Sentara Norfolk Hospital. CHKD and Sentara Norfolk are located right next to each other, though they are not affiliate hospitals of one another. I am not aware of any two hospitals that are so close in proximity (we ate lunch at Sentara one day) and not affiliated with one another. The cool thing is that they both use Kit Check. Also, this was the first time I had worked in a children’s hospital. While every hospital is unique, it was great to see our product have an impact in an institution that helps so many kids with health issues, especially as a parent of two young children.

What was something memorable about the community?
One of the things we thought was interesting was the mermaid and King Neptune statues scattered around Norfolk. The pharmacy staff could not quite explain why there were so many mermaid statues around (aside from the obvious aquatic reference).
